Flawless French Bread

My husband made a joke once that my bread cookbooks were just like porn for me. It was a silly joke, and I rolled my eyes at him, but he’s right; there are few things in this world I love more than bread. Store bought bread, bakery loaves, homemade loaves – if you can slice it and put butter on it, I’m a fan.
We got a bread machine and a lovely bread stone and loaf pan for our wedding, so I’ve really enjoyed expanding my repertoire of bread recipes. A few weeks ago, I decided to try my hand at french bread with our new bread stone. I get so frustrated with myself when a recipe doesn’t turn out exactly the way I want it to the first time, so I made sure to pick an easy one. Thankfully, I found an amazing one from Julie at My Mundane and Miraculous Life. Her Easy Peasy French Bread has a mere four ingredients and is miraculously ;) good.


I couldn’t get over how good it was. Nothing complicated, no excessive steps. Just quick and honest to goodness good bread. The inside was perfectly warm and soft and fluffy, and the crust was to die for. I tweaked Julie’s recipe a little bit. I hope you love it!

Ingredients
  • 1 and a half cups of warm water. If you’re unsure, heat a cup of water in the microwave for one minute, then add a half cup of water from the sink or fridge. This makes it the perfect temperature
  • 1/8 cup honey
  • 1 and 1/2 Teaspoons salt
  • 1 and 1/2 Tablespoons yeast (packaged or bread machine yeast – either works just fine!)
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 3 and a half cups flour
Start the Bread!
  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Prepare either a loaf pan with butter, or a bread stone dusted with flour.
  3. Combine the honey, yeast and salt in a bowl and pour the warm water over it. Set it aside and let the yeast activate. After about ten minutes, the mixture will look foamy and bubbly.
  4. Add about a half cup of flour at a time and mix. You can do this by hand, or you can use a stand mixer. Personally, I like getting my hands in there :)
  5. After you’ve added all the flour, the dough should be sticky, but not be sticking to your hands or the mixer. Add a little extra flour if you have to.
  6. Roll the dough out into a loaf and make three slits across the top. Cover it with a towel and place it in a warm spot to rise. I set mine on top of the pre-heated oven, which provides a nice toasty place for it to rise.
  7. I normally let mine rise for about an hour, but try to shoot for at least fifteen minutes.
  8. Brush the top and sides of the risen dough with the melted butter. You can also sprinkle it with herbs or cheese if you like! We’ve done ours with oregano and garlic with pasta and it’s amazing!
  9. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the inside sounds hollow and the outside is golden brown.
